He took up pencil sketching and watercolour painting as a leisure activity at the age of 72, after a long career in architecture. Since 1994 he has exhibited regularly with the British Society of Painters and the British Watercolour Society in Ilkley, where he has been elected a Fellow of The British Society of Painters (limited to 12 artists), and a Fellow of the International Guild of Artists, incorporating the British Watercolour Society (limited to 21 artists).

Maurice is a member of Brighouse Art Circle and Huddersfield Art Society, where he was the winner of the Eleanor Sykes award in 2001.

His watercolours and pastels are mainly landscapes of the Lake District, Cornwall and his native Yorkshire. He particularly enjoys pencil sketching on site, usually old buildings, farms, bridges etc., where his architectural experience is very much in evidence.
