Gordon Griffiths
Born in Cumbria in 1944. On leaving school he embarked on a career in mechanical engineering and continued with this occupation until February 1975, when after 15 years employment with UKAEA and growing increasingly dissatisfied with the industrial environment he resigned and embarked upon a sculpting profession.
{mosimage}Having dabbled with watercolour painting since childhood and primarily specialising in wildlife subjects, the natural progression seemed to be to combine this interest in wildlife with his knowledge of engineering, and therefore, using steel as a medium he now concentrates on producing lifesize (where possible) sculptures of species native to Britain and many other countries. Unlike bronze or resin sculture which is first modelled in wax or clay and finally cast in a mould, each piece is individually built by hand from steel using oxy/acetylene and occasionally electric arc welding techniques.
Living in a small farming community near the west coast of the English Lake District he draws inspiration from the abundant wild and domestic birds and mammals which exist within the varied habitat surrounding his home.
His work has been exhibited in the USA, Canada and thoughout Britain. Examples amy be seen in private collections in Australia, USA, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland and Holland. Commissions include work for Liverpool Royal Infirmary and the Grossenbacher Oil Company.
Gordon is a member of the Lake District Guild of Craftsmen and the Lake Artists Society, and has also exhibited with the Wildlife Artists Society in the Mall Galleries.
