Martin has always loved wildlife, even as a child it was “his thing” and it was natural for him to work in the countryside and later to make wildlife the subject of his art. He has been fortunate to work as a Gamekeeper, Ranger and as a manager for the Lake District National Park, all of which gave him opportunities to see wild creatures and birds ”up close”. Recently he became a self employed sculptor working primarily in “paper clay”, that is clay, modified by the addition of wood pulp. This makes the clay much more versatile and stronger at the pre-firing stage. The work is fired twice; initially in a gas kiln to 1160 degrees centigrade and then again in sawdust the smoke from which colours it. The lighter areas have been protected from the smoke by a temporary clay mask.
In his work he is trying to portray an impression of the way we see wild creatures, in a fleeting sort of a way, Martin is less interested in detail than in a sense of movement and “wildness“ and to that end he is constantly refining and developing the techniques employed in his Cockermouth studio. Previous exhibitions. “Beck road group” exhibition, Cockermouth. October 2004. Joint exhibition with Rick Cross and Richard Longstaff, Mirehouse, September 2005. Selected for the Lake Artists exhibition, July 05
