Ron Dickens
Ron was born in Glasgow. He originally worked as a draughtsman and shipwright in the yards but made the move to West Cumbria nearly 30 years ago.
Ron developed his carving skills after taking the then unusual option of staying at home to look after their three daughters while his wife went out to teach. He is a member of the Lake Artists.
He is well known through his connection with the local amateur dramatic society and is also a keen walker. He acts as a mountain guide for a holiday firm in Switzerland and the Alps. Such trips allow him to observe the wildlife he so accurately produces in wood.
Yet even after all these years he is never completely satisfied with the carvings and continues to strive for that perfect result.
His work is highly detailed and he works with a variety of wood including mahogany an local hard woods including yew, laburnam and beech.
He also paints some of his work. This is done from a natural history perspective and not as a pure carving.
